The Hutterites

Now on display in Daly House’s second floor gallery is In the World But Not Of It. The exhibit features 34 contemporary images taken by Brandon Sun photographer Tim Smith. The images depict everyday life on the Baker, Deerboine, Maple Grove, and Odanah Hutterite colonies in South Western Manitoba.
Smith has devoted the last fourteen years to this photo-documentary and his understanding of the Hutterite communities to create an unique exhibit showing the complexity of Hutterite life in a way that is responsive to how the community wishes to be seen.
Many of his images focus on the youth culture in the colonies and how expressions of youthful rebellion are inter mixed with respect for faith and traditions of their communities. The vibrant photographs also show how the colonies navigate and respond to the external pressures of the world around them while holding on to their society’s faith and key traditions.
The exhibit runs from June 8th to August 26th. Come meet Tim Smith on Wednesday July 20th 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm to learn more about his relationships with the Hutterite communities in Manitoba and his photography of their culture.
